1966
I am caught in the present of my father's past.
past
This photograph of my father as a child is foreign yet familiar in character; He sports his usual frown yet his playful attire is unexpected and stirs a curiosity. In an attempt to adapt this persona and recreate the un-recreatable, intangible past, I constructed the shirt worn by my father in 1966.
current
The photograph of my father at age 4, taken in the year 1966, serves as a gateway to the past. In conducting interviews with my father who is in Laos, recreating his childhood outfit, and documenting the process of it in New York, I form an emotional relationship with the distant past in Korea.
In exhibiting this project, I presented the process sketchbook, a juxtaposition of the original and modern photograph, and live video installations of the interviews onto a wooden board, creating an audience engagement.
